Winter is our busiest time for callouts. More heaters, more lights and wetter weather all put extra strain on your installation. These five checks take less than an hour.

1. Test your RCDs

Press the test button on each RCD in your consumer unit. It should trip straight away. If it does not, call an electrician.

2. Check outdoor fittings

Look at outdoor sockets and lights for cracked covers or water inside.

3. Skip the extension lead

Plug heaters straight into the wall, never into an extension lead.

4. Replace damaged flexes

Swap any flex or plug that is cracked, scorched or warm to the touch.

5. Test your alarms

Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and replace batteries where needed. If anything does not look or feel right, give us a call. A quick check now costs much less than an emergency callout in January.
